Charlottetown Area Watershed Association (CAWA) is a non-profit, community-based conservation organization.
We’re committed to the stewardship and conservation of the Charlottetown Area Watershed which includes several neighbourhoods within Charlottetown, including West Royalty, Sherwood, Parkdale, and parts of Winsloe and Hillsborough Park. Click here to see our exact boundaries.
As a community-based conservation group, CAWA is driven by a volunteer Board of Directors and passionate community members who share a common goal: to protect and enhance the health of our watershed.
Our History
The Charlottetown Area Watershed Association has changed significantly over time. Historically, the area was mostly forested with some agricultural use. As Charlottetown grew, residential, institutional, and commercial development replaced much of the natural landscape. Today, the watershed is largely urbanized, home to over 40,000 people, with stormwater systems, roads, and fragmented green spaces affecting water flow and habitat.
In 2022, post-tropical Fiona caused major canopy loss across Charlottetown, including a 24% decrease along Hermitage Creek and 11% in Ellen's Creek. Over 12,600 mature trees were lost city-wide, reducing total canopy cover to 17.6%. This highlighted the urgent need for restoration and climate resilience in our watershed.
Our Mission
Educate the public about the importance of watershed protection
Advocate for regulations that safeguard our waterways
Preserve, protect, and restore urban springs, streams, wetlands, estuaries, and other natural habitats
Our Team
CAWA is led by a volunteer Board of Directors, which includes a Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, and two Directors. The Board provides governance and strategic direction.
We also employ a full-time Manager/Coordinator to oversee daily operations and seasonal staff to assist fieldwork, habitat restoration, and community programs.
